Background and Current
Research:
Michael Harrell received
his B.A. and M.S. in geology from the University of Oregon in 1991 and 1994,
respectively. He completed his Ph.D., also in geology, at the University of
Washington in 2002 and joined the Department of Earth and Space Sciences as
a lecturer that same year. He is a licensed geologist in the State of Washington.
Dr. Harrell is interested in the thermodynamic and transport properties of Earth's interior, particularly those of the minerals associated with the upper mantle. His research has focused on the oxidation state of olivines and pyroxenes from xenoliths, and, more recently, the single-crystal anisotropic thermal diffusivities of these materals. His preferred method of inquiry is direct experimental interrogation at elevated pressures and temperatures. He is a member of the High Pressure Mineral Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington.
