          and trees- Most chimneys either damaged or down; many
          walls cracked. Worst damage to north walls. Over thirty
          business and school buildings damaged from very severe to
          moderate. Good to poor construction. This does not
          include those with only chimney damage. Most fallen walls
          to north or south, some to west, very few to east. Chim-
          neys twisted clockwise.  Damage to water intake to city;
          section damaged running N by NW. Damage to some railroad
          bridges. Telephone lines twisted together for many miles.
          Many objects moved, including pianos. Objects seemed to

          supply leaking badly and water supply to reservoirs failed
          with shock. One man killed and one injured by falling walls.
          "I investigated a report of water flowing from the center
          of a field about four miles southwest of town. It seemed to
          spout out of the ground about 18 inches high. It was cold
          water and was not salty. It flowed for some time. It left
          a very fine sand formation for a considerable space around
          each hole. The holes vary from 1 to 3 inches in diameter.
          There is also one crack in the ground about an inch across
          and about 9 or 10 feet long from which water poured. I also
          had a report that the caretaker on the Newaukum river intake
          noticed gas or air boiling up through the water in the river."
          (Report from the Fire Chief, Centralia)
          Chehalts. Several severely injured. City officials estimated damage

          to brick and masonry. "It didn't seem to make any difference
          in new or old construction. as far as chimneys  were  concerned;
          certain paths took them all and other places not any."
