A salmon was named XwaXwas. Now he swam up in the river to Gwanalalis and he tried to go up the beach at Odzalas and he became a man. He was the oly one on the ground before the deluge. Long ago the deluge came and he went back to his former shape when he was a salmon. Now the flood stoped at the mountain inland at (the place) to which the sea wehtn. The sea went down and he came back to Odzalas. He became a man again. And so, it is said, long ago he built a house at Odzalas, a thick beam. He had for his tool, it is said, this, like this adze. Now he was adzing his beam. Now his beam was finished. IT is said, a large bird, the Thunderbird came and sat on a rock, or a stone that has not the name Thunderbird Place. Then q he spoke to the Thunderbird, "Oh, indeed, supernatural spirit, I have you for a treasure, for this has been worked on by me in vain." Then q replied the Thunderbird. He lifted his Thunderbird mask and spoke. He said, "This is the reason of my coming, to help you. I pity the way you are." Then he soared and lighted on the beam and took it up in his talons from the ground and put it on what was already on the ground. He came down q and took off his Thunderbird dress. Then q he spoke to him, advising him, "You will not often speak,. That will only be the time when you make a noise moving whenever I reach my descendants." Now he made his Thunderbird dress fly away and it returned to where it came from above. ....
Hemanis (p. 65-66) Told by Giqalas, a Gwawaenox(sorry about the left-out accents -RSL) q means "it is said"
Mount Stevens (K!wa) was sent out of the canoe by those among whom he was sitting, the mountains. "Go, you will be Hemanis in your country. You will go and carry this your red cedar bark. Now you will go. Your cedar bark will be the reason why they will not dare to go near you. The poles holding the front boards of your house will be told to go ahead on the ground, whenever you tell your red cedar bark to go out of the house and your rattle will shake(?)."
The child of Hemanis came out of the wookds q. He made a sparrow blanket. He shot sparrows. Was not the sparrow blanket which he made right? q. He tried to get enough for a bed blanket. He arose early in the morning. He went out of his house. He went straight down to the beach holding his bow. The child wiped his eyes. He did not recognize clearly q what was seen by him. Then q a large bird was seen by the child. Then q he went back into the house. He called his father. "Do come, look at this large bird, father." Then q his father went out and looked at it. What sould it be? A bird with spread wings. The tips of the wings q reached the middle of the mountain. Then q Hemanis saw that the bird took off his blanket pin. A man came out of his bird dress and turned his face to his mask and spke, "Now you will go up agin. YOu will not keep on thundering. Only sometimes you will sound when my later generations will go (die). You will speak once at a time when those who will change places with me will go (die). You will not always blink your eyes. Go! Now you will go." The bird mask flew away. ....
