Kingdome implosion seismograms

The implosion of the Kingdome on March 26, 2001 (News Coverage) generated seismograms at many seismographs in the Seattle area and farther. Detectable signals can be seen as far away as Mount Rainier (station FMW) and in the north Cascades (station RPW). The signals generated are more similar to those generated by a large rockfall than to those generated by an earthquake. Thus determining an earthquake magnitude for this event is not valid. However, using the same techniques for determining magnitude we can estimate an "equivalent" magnitude of 2.3, which matches fairly well with how the event was perceived by people in the area and how far away the seismic waves were recorded. Seismic source appears to start at 08:32 PST.

SHIPS experiement seismograms

Four small explosions occurred on Sunday morning, Mar. 26 at about 3:45 am in four deep borehole locations around Seattle as part of the "Kingdome-SHIPS" experiement. Webicorder records of these were only really obvious for shots near the recorders. Examples of multichannel seismograms of two of four borehole shots are listed below. Tentative first arriving waves are marked with the heavy mark. The stations are sorted by distance away from the shot points.
