Glaciology is the study of ice in the environment. Important components are seasonal snow, sea ice, glaciers, ice sheets and frozen ground. Ice in all its forms plays a prominent role in climate and environmental change. Our faculty and students investigate the flow, temperature, and internal stratigraphy of glaciers, slow-moving ice domes and fast-moving ice streams in polar ice sheets; ice-core paleoclimate records; dynamics and thermodynamics of sea ice; interaction of snow and ice with solar, infrared and radar waves; and interactions of Earth's ice cover with the atmosphere, the ocean, and the solid Earth.
