Hydrothermal vents sit at the evolutionary interface between geology and microbiology, breathing new life into one of biology's most significant questions: how did carbon dioxide, rocks and water transition into living things?

Professor William Martin of the University of Düsseldorf will share his vision of how life on Earth likely originated in hot water gushing through fissures and fractures in the ancient seafloor.
