Pollution from Ships is Changing Maritime Weather

UW researchers considered 1.5bn strikes recorded in the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea by the World Wide Lightning Location Network (an international collaboration led by Dr Thornton’s colleague, Robert Holzworth) between 2005 and 2016. This report in the Economist discusses the effect on ships burning high sulphur 'bunker' fuel which will have to abide by the new maritime rule to reduce to 20% of current emission allowances for this pollution.
