Type of Service
March 23, 2009UW APLI am Assistant Director for Education (1/2-time position) at the Applied Physics Lab - University of Washington. I am responsible for educational outreach at APL including lab tours, school visits, and undergraduate scholarships. The outreach program has direct contact with about 500 members of the non-university public every year. I give approximately 2-4 Applied Physics Laboratory tours per month throughout the year. A sampling of such activities is included below. My most recent activities as Assistant Director for Education included organization of presentations to the UW Math Day, March 23, 2009. This is a University-wide activity sponsored by the UW Math Department.
March 31, 2009Sawyer Woods Elementary SchoolI participated as judge of the Sawyer Woods Elementary School Science Fair.
May 7, 2009Blanchet High SchoolI spent an entire day at Blanchet High School in Seattle. I discuss research careers, the Earth and Space Sciences Department, the Applied Physics Lab, and the physics of waves with 6 classes (nearly 200 students) of Physics and Physical Science.
May 22, 2009UWSimilar activities to Math Day were carried out for Statistics Day, May 22, 2009. This is a University-wide activity sponsored buy the UW Statistics Department.
July 7, 2009GEAR-UP ProgramI regularly organize and lead presentations and APL lab tours for the GEAR-UP Program. Our next scheduled event is July 7, 2009.
