News Programs and Events October 3, 2008 - The ESS Fall Recognition Reception will be held on Friday evening. The program (6:30-7:30pm, Kane Hall 220) will honor Professor Stu McCallum on the occasion of his upcoming retirement. There will be a reception following the program (Kane Hall 225, Walker-Ames Room). A special invitation to attend is extended to Prof. McCallum's colleagues and former students. Please RSVP to D.Ellen McDannald via email October 6, 2008 - ESS will participate in the Group Alumni Reception for the GSA 2008 Joint Annual Meeting and Exposition being held in Houston, Texas, October 5-9. The reception will be on Monday evening from 7-9:30pm in the Ballroom of Americas ABC at The Hilton Americas hotel. April 24, 2009 - During Washington Weekend (throughout campus April 23 - 25) ESS will hold an Open House on Friday, April 24. Faculty, staff, and students will host various informational and activity events. The program will be updated as plans are finalized. May 21, 2009 - The ESS Annual Awards Ceremony will be held on Thursday afternoon at 3:30pm (101 Johnson Hall). Awards include fellowships/scholarships, research support , field study support, distinguished service, faculty and student excellence in teaching, and recognition of alumni and donors. A reception will be held following the awards ceremony. Alumni Awards and Honors September 15, 2008 - Jon J. Major [Ph.D., 1996, UW Geological Sciences; advisor: Tom Dunne] will receive the Kirk Bryan Award for Research Excellence at the 2008 annual meeting of the Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology Division of the Geological Society of America for his paper titled "Post-eruption suspended sediment transport at Mount St. Helens: Decadal-scale relationships with landscape adjustments and river discharges," JGR, 2004.
