The Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) values diverse experiences and perspectives, the constructive expression of ideas, and the promotion of creativity, intellectual curiosity, and mutual respect. Science is richer and the community is more vibrant when a diverse group of people is involved. The Department is proud of our efforts in the recruitment and retention of marginalized students, staff and faculty, and the role that they play in our community. ESS is committed to diversification, and to working toward equity. We welcome everyone into our community, irrespective of their identity.
As part of a broader effort reflecting the College of the Environment and University of Washington’s commitment to diversity, we are actively engaged in reducing barriers to participation in our field. We are launching a new web site soon, which will include additional information on hiring and admissions practices, access to field work, mentoring, public lectures, etc. For now, an (incomplete) list of recommendations for "best practices" from professional organizations and others, and some past meeting materials, is available here.
