The Department of Earth and Space Sciences values diverse experiences and perspectives, the constructive expression of ideas, and the promotion of intellectual curiosity, creativity, and respect. Equity and inclusivity can only flourish and reach full potential with continued effort and accountability, nourished by a collective sense of responsibility and mission on the part of the entire community. We are committed to the continual improvement and diversification of our community.
ESS was one of the first science departments to create a formal committee to promote diversity at the University of Washington. As part of a broader effort reflecting the College of the Environment and University of Washington’s commitment to diversity, we are actively engaged in promoting an inclusive and welcoming environment.
We will be further defining and refining policies and practices, as part of our decadal strategic planning process during the 2021-2022 academic year. An (incomplete) list of resources for students, recommendations for "best practices" from professional organizations and others, and some past meeting materials, is here.
